The Darkness Crystal is fine and might actually be a funny sideboard card against the sacrifice decks because it turns off death triggers, but its usually not worth the mana investment
She depletes our own too, but since we're a Lifegain deck we can keep our life total much higher than our opponents so it's irrelevant, plus she can gain us life thanks to being a 5/5 flyer with lifelink
He's going against Pegasus to save his brother, not so he can win some silly prize
