The green side of the sword makes a 2/2 Wolf token, which doesnt really synergize with the blue ability but is great for creating new creatures to equip the Sword to incase your original creature is destroyed in some way
The only way to prevent you from getting your hand completely wrecked is to sideboard in a bunch of creatures (or a bunch of lands, but I dont really see the point of that) or to Thought Erasure or Duress away Distortion, in which case youre playing black and may as well play Thought Distortion yourself and try to wreck their hand instead
It's back now, but we probably shouldn't read too much into that
When used early, or in decks full of instants, the delay on the draw is pretty irrelevant however in the later portions of the game it is a significant drawback
