Adding cost to a spell makes a counterspell that much more painful

To start off with, the variant comes with two inherent frustrations, both rather likely to happen over the course of a game: becoming the one target for both your enemies, or having both your allies (who are enemies with each other) duking it out while you sit by and watch your enemies benefit from the progression
