Montreal metro proposal, 1944 twin cities and the voters approvedBefore World War II Montreal had a large, complex streetcar system which was privately owned. Train overcrowding was a major problem during this period, and so various plans were put forth to build a subway system to take trams off the streets. (The earliest plans I've been able to find for a Montreal subway date back to 1912!) This is the 1944 subway plan put forth by the Montreal Tramway Co., which was designed while Montrealers were overcrowding
