Note that expected value represents an average that you are more likely to reach the more booster packs you open, and that there can be substantial variance between both booster boxes and especially individual packs

It helps get you creatures onto the battlefield that care about counters, which can then start being proliferated

Tack on some card advantage in the form of a later discard and a mana sink

I've seen them in trade binders before, but I've never seen them in play (the only exception being a Booster Tutor in a friend's cube)
