I believe it was Richard Garfield's way of creating juiced, above-the-line power level cards with an ongoing drawback to enable a balanced card

Going into the late game, theres some options to pack a punch, especially if your good equipment pieces are around

I love this idea, which feels like a twist and refinement on the Bloomburrow Expend Mechanic (except you've got to pay it all on one spell), and anything that sweetens the pot when it comes to casting big instant and sorcery spells sounds good to me
